MIG Welding is widely used for car and motorcycle building and modification, but few people really understand how each of the variables affects the finished weld. This program can be easily understood by a beginner, but it covers information even seasoned professionals can learn from. Ron Covell goes through the entire process step-by-step, and gives clear descriptions of how each factor changes the weld, including wire speed, voltage, wire stickout, gun angle, travel speed, and gas flow. He also covers plug welds, patch panels, welding aluminum, and using flux core wire. You’ll especially enjoy the special bonus section on Plasma Cutting!

Disappointment

By Caretaker from Faribault, MN on 1/23/2010
Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This video is an infomercial for Miller Welders. 5 minutes of content the rest is a sales job. Save your money.

MIG Welding Made Easy

By Alan from Michigan on 10/5/2010
Pros:
Easy to follow, Very informative
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Welding has always been somewhat of a mystery to me. Blinding light, sparks, noise and suddenly 2 pieces of metal become one. Or rather, in my case, 2 pieces of metal get warped, covered in slag and get burned full of holes. MIG Welding Made Easy from Ron Covell has proven to be a great reference to me and by following Ron's suggestions my welding has improved considerably. I certainly still don't have the skills that he does, but welding is no longer a black art in my eyes. Ron covers a lot of material, and digesting it as a whole can be a bit overwhelming. Fortunately he's got it subdivided into sections including discussions about welding equipment and setup, basic welds, fitting and welding patch panels and a bit of a spotlight on some more professional equipment that someone like me would probably never need (or could ever afford!) There is even discussion about welding thicker material (car frames, boat trailers, that sort of stuff) and it was very eye-opening for me to see the right way to do things, as opposed to how I was attempting to do them. Some of the provided information could probably fit in a book and make for some good reading, but what I found is the visuals – and especially the sounds – made this video for me. My welds were suffering and I couldn't figure out why, but after the intensive section about making your first welds I had a much better understanding of how my welding sounded, and what I needed to do to improve it. This section alone merits the purchase price. In reference to the previous review that calls this a Miller Welding infomercial, Ron does use Miller products in every scene. The brief section about the more powerful equipment in particular could be construed as a bit of Miller marketing, but if that's all you get out of this video you're clearly not paying attention. I actually find this section quite interesting, as some of the equipment he shows I have not had any experience with. I am pretty confident that the other welding companies out there have similar products and it just happens that Miller was kind enough to provide these to Ron in exchange for mentioning them. In short, unless you have a NASCAR-like devotion to another welding company you shouldn't be bothered by the little Miller logos you occasionally see. I'd much rather see a manufacturer assist in a production like this than have to see irritating blurred-out logos for 80 minutes. The information on this DVD is invaluable to anyone and I heartily recommend it.
