Info

Now you can have the strength and serviceability that Ford drivers have enjoyed for years underneath your GM vehicle. Currie Crate Rearends are built using the stock overall width, pinion offest, and mounting points of your original rear axle housing, making it a 100% bolt-in upgrade.  Designed as a bolt-in kit for 1955-57 Chevy Car applications.

  • All new 9-Plus heavy duty housing
  • Replacement fit for 1955-57 Chevy chassis
  • Heavy duty 2” wide leaf spring pads installed in the stock location
  • 31 spline performance axle shafts
  • 60" width
  • Torino-style late model large bearing housing ends
  • Third member studs installed
  • Axles drilled for stock 5 on 4-3/4" wheel bolt pattern
  • 7/16"-20 wheel studs pressed into axles
  • 1/4” thick heavy duty bearing retainer plates
  • Tapered Timken style wheel bearings pressed onto axle

Note: Works with Speedway rear disc brake kits, 11" Ford Explorer disc brakes, and Wilwood disc brakes. Third member sold separately.

Installation Notes:

When installing new axles in rearends with posi traction differentials, be sure to install the driver's side axle first to keep the splines properly aligned.  Failure to do so may move the two splined gears out of alignment, and it may be difficult to install the driver's side axle properly if the passenger side axle is already installed.

If installation of passenger side axle is done first it may require two people when installing the driver's side axle, with both parties rotating reach axle until splines are in line and the driver's side axle fully sides into the housing.

To ensure you get the most out of your new 9 Inch components, Currie recommends that you perform a proper break-in process:

  • Use a name brand mineral-based gear oil, preferably 85w140 (Extremely high quality synthetic oils may be used once break-in process has been successfully performed)
  • Place vehicle on jack stands and let the rearend spin while the vehicle idles - run transmission in both forward and reverse periodically throughout the process
  • Continue to run the rearend until the pinion gets hot (place hand on bottom of the differential housing to verify this)
  • Proper break-in allows:
    • The ability to install new axles and hit the track the same day without worry
    • Extended life for rearend components
    • Keeps the quality and life of your gear oil

Note: If you find that your rearend is running somewhat "tight" be sure to add Currie's 9+ Friction Modifier to "loosen up".  If a more aggressive performance is desired, Friction Modifier is not needed.

This is 60" wide from axle flange to axle flange and has a 2 1/2" axle offset so the housing only will measure 55" wide from bearing flange to bearing flange.

9” Ford replacement rear end for the 55-57 Chevy is 60” wheel mount face to wheel mount face which is according to the factory width the cars came with from the factory.

These axles are provided without the bearings pressed on. Sorry for the confusion. We have that incorrectly listed. The picture is accurate which shows the bearings included but not pressed on.

No this 9" Ford axle will not accept your stock brakes or backing plates. You will need drum brake kit 91096227 for this rear axle. This axle does not include a third member. 9" Fords had several different yokes on them so if you are building you own third member then the U joint needed will vary depending upon the yoke you install. If you purchase one of our third member assemblies such as 91048345 then it comes with a yoke that uses a 1310 size U-joint which is 3 7/32" wide and 1 1/16" OD caps.

Disc brake kit 91031902 or 91031921 with emergency brake can be used on this rear axle. The rotors in that kit will need the center hole machined to 2.795" ID in order for them to seat properly on the axles in this rear end kit.

Looking to put larger wheels in the back useing a spring pocket kit. not sure if the 58" or 56" will work best but either way will have to weld on the new leaf spring mounts. whats the angle of the spring mounts in relation to the 3rd member/center section mounting surface?

I'm sorry to say I don't know what the angle of the spring pads are on these Currie housings. The important thing to consider is that the pinion needs to be an equal angle, but opposite direction from the transmission output yoke angle.

These 9" housings are sold as a kit with the axle shafts included. We apologize, but do not have the ability to split them up.

This axle kit will work with any 31 spline posi unit such as our part # 910109031. You could use the Speedway brake kit # 91031921 or the Wilwood kit # 8351407140. The Currie axle have an oversized axle register and both kits will require the center of the rotor to be opened up a few thousands.
