What's in the Box

Info

This complete disc brake kit easily installs big 11-3/4" rotors on your 1937-1948 Ford car or 1937-1947 Ford 1/2 ton pickup spindles while retaining the original 5 on 5-1/2" bolt circle.

This kit will work with spindles having either original steering arms or with flat steel steering arms. It will NOT work with forged aftermarket steering arms. Wheels must have 3-7/16" center hole and have been designed for disc brake applications. Will NOT work with early Ford factory wire or steel drum brake wheels. You will need to use a later disc brake steel wheel or aftermarket wheel.

I would buy this product again

October 21, 2015
I used this kit to replace the mechanical drum brakes on my 1937 Ford Pickup. Everything went together perfectly without any modifications. The only thing I had to add was 1/8" spacers to the caliper brackets as a couple of others had to do. Maybe these could be added to the kit in the future. Need to add "/" and "." to pros and cons
Pros:
  • Great instructions
  • Easy To Install
  • Well Made
Cons:
  • Needs 0125" Spacers
  • Needs 18" Spacers
Yes, I recommend this product.

Great Kit and Instructions

September 23, 2014
I am mechanicly inclined and can follow directions. I am by no means a shade tree mechanic. I am the type of guy that has to look at 3 or 4 videos on youtube before I feel comfortable enough the tackel the individual steps. That being said, this kit was very easy to install. The one spot of difficulty was removing the inner wheel bearing races. There is no slot on the rotor casting to be able to get a good edge for a punch to knock it out. After about 30 minutes of trying and beating myself up I gave up. Then I found some videos where folks used mig welders to weld a bead on just the race. It worked. The weld somehow shrunk the race and it just fell out. Be sure not to weld it to the rotor or you are out of luck. Overall, I had no issues with this kit. It went together just as instructed. I took me 7 - 8 hours of total time to do this project including installing a proportioning valve (not included inthe kit) and bleeding the brakes. The difference in performance is remarkable. I can stop 20 ft shorter going 30 mph than I could with the old drum brakes. I would defiitely do this again if I had another vehicle. This kind of kit, the reasonable price, and the wonderful technical suport I received have made me a life-long speedway customer. You are doing Speedy proud.
Pros:
  • Great instructions
  • reasonable cost
  • great phone tech support
Cons:
  • inner wheel bearing removal
  • i did not buy this sooner
Yes, I recommend this product.

Done in a day.

August 25, 2014
Everything fit pretty good. I had to grind down part of the casting on the calipers to get them to fit right, which is in the instructions. Also had to grind a slot into one of the brackets to clear a bolt on the drivers side. I wound up using the stock bearing cups that you're supposed to replace and just doubled up the washer between the wheel bearing and castle nut on the spindle. Used the old ones and new ones that came with the kit. Everything is snug and the cotter pin is doing it's job so I think that's an easier fix. Got it all done in about 6 hours including 2 trips to NAPA. Haven't driven the truck yet but we will see. Good kit for the price!
Pros:
  • Right price
  • Fairly easy to install
Cons:
  • instructions could be better
  • some fab work needed
Yes, I recommend this product.

This brake kit on a 48” axle nets 56 1/2" from hub face to hub face. Depending on your axle which is measured from kingpin to kingpin centerline you can easily calculate the difference. If you have a 50” axle it would be 58 1/2" etc.

I am looking at the 916-31909 caliper bracket to achieve a 5 on 5 pattern I purchased a dropped axle with a disc brake conversion a friend decided not to use. It had what looked like the same calipers and rotors that were on my 72 Camaro. It also looked like your 910-31921. I want a 5 on 5 bolt pattern so I looked for a rotor that would work. Closest I could find was a Centric # 121.62003 that fit a 77 Cadillac Deville. It appears to use the same bearings as the Chevy rotor and is 1 inch thick but it is 11.89 in diameter. Do you think your 916-31909 caliper brackets would work with the Cad rotors . It appears the Ford rotors are 11.72 in diameter.

The small difference in rotor diameter will probably not cause an issue. The only way to know for sure is to give it a try however. Sorry we have never tried using this bracket with the Cadillac rotor that you mention.

This brake kit with 5 on 5.5" bolt pattern will not fit the 34 spindles and you will need to use our 28-48 spindles part number 91032104 on your axle. These have the same king pin diameter so it is an easy swap. Then on the wheels a spacer is normally required but the thickness varies. If you lay a ruler across the back side of your wheel in the center and measure down to the mount surface where it meets the hub anything over 3/4” will require that much of a spacer. For example if you wheel measures 1 1/4" then you would need 1/2" spacer.

Look online at the videos which instruct you about how to remove a bearing race using a mig welder. I was unable to beat them out with a punch. There is no slot in the rotor casting for a punch and there is barely enough of a lip to catch the punch. I gave up after about 30 minutes. I then saw some videos on how to use the welder. Some of the videos were from mechanics courses so I felt that this was a legitimate course of action. I tried it and it worked. I welded a bead with my mig welder rignt on the race and as it cooled, it fell right out. Be sure that you do not weld on the edge of the race as you may mistakenly weld it to the rotor. That would be bad. Also, consider using welding paste to make the unwanted splatter easy to remove.

Removal of the old race is the most challenging part. You will need a punch, a hammer, and some patients to remove it. To drive the new race in a driver such as 91089625 is a big help.

No this brake kit will not accept a stock 47 Mercury wheel. The early wheels wrapped around the brake drum and on the 11 ¾” diameter rotor and adding for the caliper you would need 14.5” minimum for clearance inside the wheel. Sorry I do not offer a disc brake kit that will work with your wheels.

Your 51 Ford wheel should have a 5 on 4 ½ unless it is a pickup. The pickup carried the 5 on 5 ½ pattern thru 51. If it is the 4 ½ then we offer several kits with that pattern. Our best seller is number 91031945 and this works with most wheels The 5 on 5 ½ pattern in kit number 91031909 has larger rotors and may not work with your application. The vintage 51 wheels commonly wrapped around the brake drums and if you lay a 12” ruler across the center and measure down to the bolt surface anything over ¾ “ will be the amount of spacer to clear the rotor.

Brake kit number 91031909 for disc brakes may have similar dimensions for the wheel bolt surface but if planning on using the original wheels the clearance problems occur in the area of the caliper. With the wheel you plan on using removed from the vehicle lay a 12” ruler across the center on the back side. Measure down to the bolt surface and anything over ¾” will require that much of a spacer to achieve caliper clearance.

Kit number 91031909 has the early 5 on 5 ½ bolt pattern but the original wheels will not work off your Model A as they wrapped around the brake drum and will run into the caliper before they are seated on the mount surface. For ease of assembly here is a list of the parts needed for your Model A. 91031909---Brake kit 91032104---Spindle and king pin kit 91632022---Flat plate steering arms 91632501---Tie rod in the length needed 7204010---Upper steering arm. 1750128---Heim end for the upper steering arm to drag link. Then of course you will need the brake components to complete the job. Depending on the lay out of your Model A would dictate the brake components used.
