What's in the Box

Info

Just because you've got a vintage Flathead Ford V8 in your ride doesn't mean you're stuck with the antiquated charging system. Switching to a tried-and-true GM 1-wire alternator is a great upgrade for any Flathead-equipped vehicle with a 12-volt electrical system.

  • Bracket fits 1946-1953 V-8 engines
  • Heavy-duty steel construction w/ chrome plating
  • Designed to work with the two narrow-belt drive system typical of late '50-'53 Ford/Mercury passenger cars
  • Will not work with single wide belts unless the alternator is modified (see Notes)

Mounting Guide (Link)

Application

  • 1946-1953 Flathead Ford V-8 engines with narrow two-belt drive systems
  • Can be used with wide single-belt configurations with some modification
  • Must use different fan bracket on some 1945-1948 applications

Notes

  1. This bracket assembly is designed to mount the common SI-style GM alternator in a centered location on 1946-1953 Flathead Ford V8s. The brackets are intended to be used with a narrow-belt, two-belt configuration.
  2. To use this bracket on a single wide belt car or truck you would need to cut approximately 1/2" to 5/8" from the wide boss on the base of the alternator. You would also need to cut a similar amount from the spacer supplied with the bracket. This must be done to get the alternator pulley to line up with the drive belt.
  3. Bracket usually provides enough clearance for center mounting of an alternator even on Super Dual and Triple style Flathead intakes on late style engine. The alternator mounts in front of the bracket.

Be advised.

This is as nice a product as I have seen, and the instructions for modifications for proper alternator fit that come with the bracket are spot on. However, I bought this along with the optional wider "truck" pulley, with intentions of using this with the truck style water pumps and crank pulley. I also used the wider truck application fan hub. Be advised, the stock belts won't fit! I finally went to my local auto parts supplier and got a selection of differing length belts, and played around with them to get a set that would work. A lot of fartin' around, but I'm very pleased with the result. My rating is for the quality of the part and instructions. Just wish there was some sort of notice in the listing about belt fitment issues.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Good Product.

This bracket is plenty heavy duty for mounting a GM alternator. Be advised the holes are threaded 7/16 x 14tpi, so the original bolts on your generator mount likely won't fit. You'll need to source new bolts. I picked up some stainless bolts locally. Before you buy this bracket, make sure you do not intend to mount an A/C compressor. If you will want to upgrade to A/C, there are brackets available that mount the alternator and compressor side by side, and this bracket would be made useless. If you only want to mount the alternator, this bracket is a good value.
Yes, I recommend this product.

I found that the single wide belt was to short after installing and aligning alt.Now I am haveing trouble finding a longer belt to fit. I replaced the two stock water pumps with speedway pumps (wide belt pullie stock type) intending to keep a single wide belt. Do you sell a longer belt that will fit the gm alt system?

We apologize for the inconvenience but currently we do not offer different lengths of the 5/8” belts. Check your local auto parts store for availability of these belts. We have good luck finding them at Napa or Carquest stores.

I have a 49 ford with a flathead and I have two belts. One is 5/8" and the other 3/4". Will I have to modify this bracket or will it just bolt on? The notes confused me because they say 2 narrow belts. Thanks in advance.

This bracket is designed to work with the later 50-53 Ford two belt system with two narrow belts. If wanting to run the wide 5/8” belt to drive the alternator you would need to change the front pulley to a wide belt pulley. We offer part number 91016250 in plain steel and 91016251 in chrome to overcome that problem. For proper belt alignment some modification to the alternator housing or bracket may be required.
