Carrera Coil Over Shock Kit

May 15, 2016
Installed on my 1940 ford pickup. The only disappointment I have is the springs are very loose. The inside dia. is to large, I worry they will slip over the adjuster.
No, I would not recommend this product.

very impressive product!

These coilovers glow like jewels in the rear of my bare steel custom frame. The triangulated link bars are black, the axle is from a junkyard explorer so nothing is close to polished. Thanks for the accent! alan
Pros:
  • finish is super.

Coil overs on the Jag rear ends has always been a big question mark. With the four shocks and springs and unknown weight of your 40 pickup in many cases it is a trial and error basis. If you are setting at about 2800 pounds vehicle weight Carrera suggests a 200 weight spring on all 4. If heavier such as 3100 pounds the rate goes up to 225# and so on. If for some reason you have an exceptionally heavy 40 in the 3650 range it may take up to a 275 spring and on the other end of the scale of course the rate would go down. Front to rear wight distribution also plays an important role and the pickups usually are on the lighter side in the rear.

Carrera coil over shock kit number 2552254A assembles simply with lighter weight springs but as the spring rate increases in some cases a spring compressor may be required. First the snap ring needs to be installed by sliding up from the bottom and taking care not to over extend the snap ring. Second slide the threaded sleeve dowon onto the snap ring with the chamfered non threaded portion seating down on the ring. Third turn the adjuster ring all the way to the bottom and slip the spring on till it seats on the adjuster ring. Compress the spring as needed and slip the upper cone onto the spring via the slot and release spring so that it seats on the upper shoulder under the shock eye mount. Although normally not needed for street rod use the safety pin can be installed on the upper cone and also the zip ties securing the spring to the cone. These are for extreme duty such as sand rails, etc. Install the shock on the car and adjust the adjuster ring ¼ to 1/3 up the threads and let the vehicle weight down on the shock. Bounce the suspension a few times and then check mount length of the shock. With all the weight on the shock as if the car was ready to go down the road the mount length needs to be 12 3/8 to 12 ½” eye to eye. Adjustment can be made on the adjuster ring to achieve this. If over half way up the threads the spring rate is too light and if towards the bottom of the threads the spring rate is too heavy and changing spring rates is suggested.

The pin goes in the top spring retainer. There are two small holes on each side of the slot at the top where the spring retainer fits over the shock rod. The cable ties are in case the pin comes out. Just go around one coil of the spring and through the eye of the pin.

Carrera street rod coil overs can be used on almost any application and are available with numerous spring rates. Mount length is the most critical concern and is 123/8 to 12 ½” which allows 50% of the stroke available for compression during suspension travel. Adjuster ring should be ¼ to 3/8 up the threaded portion to achieve mount length and is achieved by choosing the correct spring rate.

To determine the correct spring rate. First you need to know a couple of things. · Mounted Length: 12-3/8" · Compressed Length: 9-3/4" · Extended Length: 14-5/8" · Engine type and size · Fenders or not It is best to call Speedway Motors and speak with one of our street rod techs for picking spring rates.

900 kg is equal to 1984 pounds so you will need 275 to 300 spring rate if that is the weight on the rear. If that is total weight of the vehicle then a 125 rate would be sufficient.
