Worth every penny

August 31, 2012
I order this for an electric fan installation. I didn't end up need one with such a large load. I figured for the price it would suit my needs because it would be under rated. Boy was I surprised when I received this thing. I will use it the next time I install an air compressor.
Pros:
  • Durable
  • Easy To Install
Yes, I recommend this product.

Best for what they are used for.

October 20, 2011
I am an starting drag car builder( 1/8-1/4 strip) I use these relays for the fan, water pump, fuel pump and any other application where I need to tame the 12 volt input. They are used in conjunction with a six gang switch box with starter button. This was my second order from Speedway for this item. If I build a third car I will order another five or so 40 amp relays.
Pros:
  • Easy To Use
  • Easy To Install
Yes, I recommend this product.

Wow! I know it is just a relay but:

September 11, 2011
I have been looking for a fuel pump relay. Most rate relay harnesses at 30 amps then give you 12-14 gauge wire to hook it up. This has 10 gauge wire probably overkill but that's what I want.
Pros:
  • Durable
  • Easy To Install
Yes, I recommend this product.

Good Price, Unusual Wiring

June 02, 2011
This relay has an extra (fifth) wire for no apparent reason. The instruction sheet that comes with the relay is minimal, but the PDF file available with the online description is more helpful. It says the fifth wire is not normally used. So, why is it there? Looks tacky if wire is to be left dangling.
Pros:
  • Priced right
No, I would not recommend this product.

If the white wire is not normally used, what would it be used for? Second speed on fan, maybe?

The white wire (87A terminal of the relay) will have 12V power connected at all times when the relay does not have 12V power applied to the blue wire (86 terminal of the relay). In other words the white wire works opposite of the blue wire. Any time there IS power at the blue wire there will not be power at the white wire. Any time there is NO power at the blue wire there will be power at the white wire. The technical term for this type of circuit is 'normally closed' and can be abbreviated as N/C.

This relay could be used on almost any application to buffer the current draw on the switch. It will handle up to 40 amp on start up and if needed Speedway also offers 91050051 which will handle a 70 amp start up draw.

Universal Relay for Fan/Horn
(Part #91064109)

This heavy duty relay takes the heavy-amp load off the switch, thus preventing an overheated circuit and a possible wiring harness fire. Works well with electric fans and horn circuits too. 30 amp relay.

The wiring for the relay is as follows:

  • Short Red Wire (from relay post 87) = power lead to horn or fan
  • Long Red Wire (from relay post 30) = main power supply in
  • Short Black Wire (from relay post 85) = makes ground connection thru a temp sensitive switch or a grounding horn button
  • Long Gray Wire (from relay post 86) = connects to switched 12 volt power (like ignition switch) so horn or fan turns on/off with key

Includes relay, circuit breaker, wire, terminals and instructions.

(Part #91030111)

This thermostat from Painless Performance allows your electric fan to turn off and on at your desired temperature you want. Recommended for all electric fan installations, these thermostat switches are sure to keep your engine cool and running.

  • 185 Degrees ON, 175 Degrees OFF
  • Thermostatic switch and 1/2"NPT to 3/8"NPT adapter only
  • Sold Individually
Electric Fan Sensor, 1/2 NPT
(Part #91064013)

This trick electric fan switch is a normally open temperature switch with 1/2" NPT male threads that screws into your intake manifolds water passage. When the coolant reaches 185°-215°, the contacts on the cooling fan switch close, activating a relay which directs current to your electric fan. When the engine cools, the contacts on the fan relay switch open, and the fan stops automatically. This radiator fan switch arrangement is not adjustable, but is more rugged than other temperature fan switch setups.

NOTE: This thermal fan switch must be used with a fan relay. If installed as a gounding fan switch, it will burn out. We suggest using this temperature fan switch with our relay 910-64044. Make sure the fan switch is mounted in the manifold or radiator tank so that the bulb is submerged in the HOT engine coolant.
