What is the proper way to plumb this expansion tank. Do you go from the radiator cap to the top of the tank, and then how do you plumb it back to the system?

This book relates to the proper and best procedures in order to obtain the best cooling from your vehicle. In reference to plumbing an expansion tank there are basic principals that apply. The radiator must be for a pressurized system and designed to work with a recovery style cap in the appropriate pressure rating. From the nipple or hose barb on the radiator neck a hose is routed to an expansion tank. Normally the tanks have two inlet/outlets and the hose connects to the nipple or fitting that ends toward the bottom of the tank. The other fitting or nipple normally extends upward towards the top of the tank and serves as the vent for the system and also as an emergency dump for extreme cases. The second fitting in some tank actually comes simply from the top of the tank. As engine and coolant temperature rise the coolant expands and as the cap pressure is reached it releases the appropriate amount of coolant to keep the radiator full and the coolant goes into the overflow tank. The vent allows the excess air to leave the tank. As the engine cools down suction occurs in the radiator and the coolant in the overflow tank is drawn back into the radiator resulting in a full tank. The more fluid in the radiator at all times results in superior cooling over the older pressure relief style radiators.
