Q & A

What's in the Box

If you want the early look but are reluctant to use old non-energizing drum brakes, we have just what you need. Our 100% new self-energizing backing plate assemblies come complete with shoes, wheel cylinders and hardware. Fits either the front or rear of 1937-48 Ford cars or 1937-47 Ford half-ton pickups with original style rear axle.

These brake assemblies can be used with Buick drums and 1948 Ford hubs, or we also offer new iron 12" x 2" brake drums (910-65400) with 5 on 5-1/2" bolt circle which are impossible to find elsewhere.

  • Wheel Cylinder Inlet: 7/16"-20 straight thread
    • NOT 7/16"-20 IFF
    • Inlet fitting will require a sealing washer or O-ring style fitting
  • Bolt Pattern: 3-3/8" center-to-center both horizontal and vertically
    • If using Model A or B spindles the holes will have to be elongated inward to fit the narrower bolt pattern
    • We recommend use of adapter rings 916-31928 to keep the spindle centered in the backing plate

Notes

  1. Spindle modification is necessary when installing these backing plates. Up to 1/4" of material may need to be removed on the top of the spindle.
  2. Our flat plate steering arms WILL NOT fit this backing plate.

Bendix Brakes on '39 Ford

July 24, 2012
These comments relate to the installation of these brakes to the front of a '39 Ford with one-piece wide 5 hub/drum. There was significant clearance issues between the backing plate and the spindle. Had to cut away a large portion of the top of the spindle (pictures attached). Used a cutting wheel on a die grinder for the initial cut and ground to get the final fit. Once installed they work fine, much better than the original non-self energizing. The instructions and pre-purchase info understate the work required to fit the product to front spindles.
Pros:
  • Decreased Stopping Distance
Yes, I recommend this product.

good function, bad replica

December 07, 2010
I bought this for a customers car to run with buick drums. I was really let down with the stamping of the backing plates. Its almost like they were not stamped deep enough, the lines lacked definition. They were a poor representation of the originals. But the backing plates were really thick and everything function wise seamed stout. If looks are of no concern they are fine. But for the price I would expect a better product.
Pros:
  • Functional
  • Good hardware
  • Backing plates are solid
No, I would not recommend this product.

The Bendix brakes have 7/16” straight thread and require a sealing washer or O-ring or both. Part number 6174132 along with a crush washer number 6173513 along with an O-ring is suggested.

The Bendix style brakes number 91065410 are the late 40’s to 50’s Lincoln style brakes. The 1 ¾” shoes will work with original 1936 to 48 Ford drums and the 2” will work with the Lincoln drums, the aftermarket drums offered by Speedway, or the finned Buick drums. Mt Brake would be a source for replacement shoes when needed.

Part number 91065410 Painting would be a good suggestion to avoid rusting and deterioration. Some customer disassemble the components and have the backing plates powder coated.

Will this product work with my original 1947 Ford drums?

You inquired about our part numbers 91065410 and 91065420 which are the complete backing plate and brakes for the 37-48 Ford. The majority of the time these will work with the original 12” drums but you would need to order the correct ones per the width of your drums machined wear surface. I have received comments that in some cases the customer may have to machine off some of the edge of the original drums to obtain clearance on the backing plate. Another concern is your spindle mounting area. If you look at the backing plate you will note especially on the back side the area at the top of the mount surface. This is flat and recessed inwards for the wheel cylinder space. You may need to grind the top edge off your spindle to enable the backing plate to sit flat on the spindle.

These self energizing Bendix style brakes are designed to work with the 37-48 axles and spindles. To use on an earlier vehicle you will also need to purchase our hydraulic brake adapter rings under part number 91631928 for the front spindles. Once installed in the backing plates the ring centers the backing plate on the spindle. The mount holes on the earlier spindles is 3 1/16” compared to the later 37 and up which is 3 3/8” so the holes will require elongation for proper bolt up. You will also need to remove some of the top of the spindle casting to allow clearance for the wheel cylinder drop formed into the backing plate. On the rear there are similar problems and there are some additional parts not available at Speedway Motors that will need to be obtained from MT Brakes. We do offer new front hubs under part number 91065450 and the bearing and seal kit for two hubs under part number 91065455. Rear hubs number 91065460 and hub bearing number 91065455. Brake drums are available under part number 91065400 and we also have the rear kits with E-brake under part number 921065430 or 91065440.
