What's in the Box

Info

Our economical 9" Ford rear axle housing features a reclaimed center section, new 3" axle tubes, and new-style Ford ends. Total track width is 56" from hub-to-hub.   The pumpkin is centered in the housing, which puts the pinion offset 1 5/8" from center.

Includes a set of Currie 31-spline heat-treated, forged alloy axle shafts. Wheel bolt patterns are dual drilled for 5 on 4 1/2" Ford and 5 on 4 3/4" Chevy, and an access hole is drilled. Axles come with a full installation package which includes one set of five 1/2"-20 Ford style wheel studs, one set of five 7/16"-20 Chevy style wheel studs, one set-20 tapered roller bearing with race, seal, & collar, and one heavy duty late model large bearing style retainer plate. Axle bearing does not come pressed onto the axle shaft, and wheel studs are not installed.

Third member sold separately.

Tubes aren't welded true and level so adjustments have to be made when welding on brackets. Housing badly pitted and weld spatter all over. Not a diff. For a show quality car. Axles advertised as without bearings pressed on but come all together so plates need cut off for some brake applications. Should use open plates.
No, I would not recommend this product.

Excellent Kit

May 09, 2014
I just finished assembling my rear end and had no problems. Although the housing is assembled with a reclaimed center, the whole thing was completely rust-free. The reclaimed center has some minor pitting, but that's to be expected and gives it a little "patina." Nice Currie axles. All the parts are there. Just install a differential, slide in the axles and bolt them up with your brake kit. Only had one minor issue. Tightening the T-bolts on the retainer on the passenger side seemed to pre-load the bearings. Simply used thin washers as spacers and corrected the problem without any resulting end-play in the axle.
Pros:
  • top quality parts
Yes, I recommend this product.

The 56” rear end is used under our Model A chassis. The wheel and tire combination will also come into play but you should be able to fit the tires in the fenders with this rear end.

Disc brake bracket installation by Speedway? I see that if I buy this housing in conjunction with a chassis kit, Speedway will install the proper suspension mounting brackets for free (is that correct?). If I buy a rear disc brake kit when I buy the chassis & rear axle, will Speedway install the caliper brackets on the axle as well?

Yes we will weld the brackets for the chassis kit on if ordering this rear end option at the same time. We have a bolt on disc brake kit that can be used with this rear end which is 91031902 or 91031921 with emergency brake provisions. With either of these kits you wouldn't have to do any welding.

OUTSIDE DIMENSION OF THE HOUSING IS 51". THE AXLES ADD AN ADDITIONAL 2-1/2' PER SIDE BRINGING THE TOTAL WIDTH TO 56". THIS DIMENSION IS THE AXLE FACES WHERE THE DRUMS OR ROTORS WOULD BE INSTALLED.
March 11, 2013
Jason
The 56" dimension for this kit refers to the distance from the face of one axle to the face of the other axle.(the housing measures approximately 51" from flange face to flange face)

The hub to hub width is 56"(where the wheels bolt on) on this 9" Ford housing. The net actual pinion offset is 2 3/8” and would need to be checked for clearance on drive shaft tunnel or frame and suspension components.

Will this rear end work on my 1930 chevy hotrod im building

HILLBILLYWILLY
it kind of depends on the offset of the wheels you are planning on running. need more information to give you an informed answer. sorry!!
November 20, 2012
Jason
The 56" rear end is the common width used on the early hot rods including your 1930 Chevy. Wheel offset and tire belly width will need to be considered when ordering. In some cases a wide wheel of say 10" and a tire such as a 13/30 x 15 may cause inner clearance issues and require a spacer.

you do not need the thin gasket between housing and backing plate. the seal is incorporated right around the circumference of the bearing

Part number 91046110 The bearing and retainer plate seal the end and no additional gasket is required.

This rear end housing DOES come with the axles and axle bearings and the pinion is centered. The 56” is axle face to axle face track width. It features the New style Big Ford housing ends which accept Speedway disc brake kits and also the 11” drum brake sets we offer.

This bare axle housing with axles does NOT come with brackets for any specific application. If purchased concurrently with a frame such as our ’32 frame or our T bucket chassis and the suggested rear suspension package Speedway welds on the correct brackets to complete the package free of charge. If the rear end is purchased with the desired suspension package for a different application it will be up to the customer or builder to install the brackets in the correct location for that application. This would require mock up of frame at ride height to set the pinion angle at the correct angle for that application and ride stance. Various frame widths, rake on the front end, and other factors determine correct bracket location.

Our Speedway Centered 9” rear housing with axles centers the housing for the correct look from the rear. The net actual pinion offset is 2 3/8” and would need to be checked for clearance on drive shaft tunnel or frame and suspension components.
