Our economical 9" Ford rear axle housing features a reclaimed center section, new 3" axle tubes, and new-style Ford ends. Total track width is 56" from hub-to-hub.   The pumpkin is centered in the housing, which puts the pinion offset 2-3/8" from center

Axles come with a full installation package which includes one set of five 1/2"-20 Ford style wheel studs, one set of five 7/16"-20 Chevy style wheel studs, one set-20 tapered roller bearing with race, seal, & collar, and one heavy duty late model large bearing style retainer plate. Excellent Kit

May 09, 2014
I just finished assembling my rear end and had no problems. Although the housing is assembled with a reclaimed center, the whole thing was completely rust-free. The reclaimed center has some minor pitting, but that's to be expected and gives it a little "patina." Nice Currie axles. All the parts are there. Just install a differential, slide in the axles and bolt them up with your brake kit. Only had one minor issue. Tightening the T-bolts on the retainer on the passenger side seemed to pre-load the bearings. Simply used thin washers as spacers and corrected the problem without any resulting end-play in the axle.
Pros:
  • top quality parts
Yes, I recommend this product.

Great Value

August 09, 2011
Currie 31-spline axles and a narrowed housing at way less than similar product costs. The only draw back was a lot of pitting on the center section I received, but that's the luck of the draw as they are reclaimed. If you are going for a show car the pitting would have to be filled and the welds ground and filled. But I'm building a good looking driver and am glad I saved several hundred dollars in the process.
Yes, I recommend this product.

The 56” rear end is used under our Model A chassis. The wheel and tire combination will also come into play but you should be able to fit the tires in the fenders with this rear end.

Disc brake bracket installation by Speedway? I see that if I buy this housing in conjunction with a chassis kit, Speedway will install the proper suspension mounting brackets for free (is that correct?). If I buy a rear disc brake kit when I buy the chassis & rear axle, will Speedway install the caliper brackets on the axle as well?

Yes we will weld the brackets for the chassis kit on if ordering this rear end option at the same time. We have a bolt on disc brake kit that can be used with this rear end which is 91031902 or 91031921 with emergency brake provisions. With either of these kits you wouldn't have to do any welding.

OUTSIDE DIMENSION OF THE HOUSING IS 51". THE AXLES ADD AN ADDITIONAL 2-1/2' PER SIDE BRINGING THE TOTAL WIDTH TO 56". THIS DIMENSION IS THE AXLE FACES WHERE THE DRUMS OR ROTORS WOULD BE INSTALLED.
March 11, 2013
Jason
The 56" dimension for this kit refers to the distance from the face of one axle to the face of the other axle.(the housing measures approximately 51" from flange face to flange face)

YES THAT IS CORRECT. WITHOUT THE AXLES IN MEASURES 51" TOTAL

The hub to hub width is 56"(where the wheels bolt on) on this 9" Ford housing. The net actual pinion offset is 2 3/8” and would need to be checked for clearance on drive shaft tunnel or frame and suspension components.

Will this rear end work on my 1930 chevy hotrod im building

HILLBILLYWILLY
it kind of depends on the offset of the wheels you are planning on running. need more information to give you an informed answer. sorry!!
November 20, 2012
Jason
The 56" rear end is the common width used on the early hot rods including your 1930 Chevy. Wheel offset and tire belly width will need to be considered when ordering. In some cases a wide wheel of say 10" and a tire such as a 13/30 x 15 may cause inner clearance issues and require a spacer.

you do not need the thin gasket between housing and backing plate. the seal is incorporated right around the circumference of the bearing

Part number 91046110 The bearing and retainer plate seal the end and no additional gasket is required.

This rear end housing DOES come with the axles and axle bearings and the pinion is centered. The 56” is axle face to axle face track width. It features the New style Big Ford housing ends which accept Speedway disc brake kits and also the 11” drum brake sets we offer.

This bare axle housing with axles does NOT come with brackets for any specific application. If purchased concurrently with a frame such as our ’32 frame or our T bucket chassis and the suggested rear suspension package Speedway welds on the correct brackets to complete the package free of charge. If the rear end is purchased with the desired suspension package for a different application it will be up to the customer or builder to install the brackets in the correct location for that application. This would require mock up of frame at ride height to set the pinion angle at the correct angle for that application and ride stance. Various frame widths, rake on the front end, and other factors determine correct bracket location.

Our Speedway Centered 9” rear housing with axles centers the housing for the correct look from the rear. The net actual pinion offset is 2 3/8” and would need to be checked for clearance on drive shaft tunnel or frame and suspension components.

How to Measure Your Housing Tech Tip (Link)

Need a certain length not found on our site?  Check out Currie's 9+ Rearend Calculator to have specially sized axles or rearend housings made for your specific application.  Custom orders will be built and processed directly through Currie Enterprizes and shipped to your door. For ease of ordering, please refer to Currie's Dimension Diagram

Installation Notes:

When installing new axles in rearends with posi traction differentials, be sure to install the driver's side axle first to keep the splines properly aligned.  Failure to do so may move the two splined gears out of alignment, and it may be difficult to install the driver's side axle properly if the passenger side axle is already installed.

If installation of passenger side axle is done first it may require two people when installing the driver's side axle, with both parties rotating reach axle until splines are in line and the driver's side axle fully sides into the housing.

To ensure you get the most out of your new 9 Inch components, Currie recommends that you perform a proper break-in process:

  • Use a name brand mineral-based gear oil, preferably 85w140 (Extremely high quality synthetic oils may be used once break-in process has been successfully performed)
  • Place vehicle on jack stands and let the rearend spin while the vehicle idles - run transmission in both forward and reverse periodically throughout the process
  • Continue to run the rearend until the pinion gets hot (place hand on bottom of the differential housing to verify this)
  • Proper break-in allows:
    • The ability to install new axles and hit the track the same day without worry
    • Extended life for rearend components
    • Keeps the quality and life of your gear oil

Note: If you find that your rearend is running somewhat "tight" be sure to add Currie's 9+ Friction Modifier to "loosen up".  If a more aggressive performance is desired, Friction Modifier is not needed.

Ford 9 Inch Posi Traction Third Member Assembly
(Part #91048345)

If you’re looking for a complete third member for your Ford 9-inch rear end housing, but want the added performance of a limited slip differential, Speedway Motors now offers you a 9" Ford street 3rd member for your street rod. We start with reclaimed, genuine Ford 9-inch carrier housings and then clean and inspect them prior to installing all-new bearings, seals, a 1310-series yoke, and your choice of ring-and-pinion gears. The 1310-series yoke is the correct size for many Ford applications with cups 1-1/16 inch in outside diameter and a span of 3-7/32 inch across.

These Ford 9 inch third member assemblies feature a Richmond Powertrax Grip Pro differential available in 28 or 31 spline axle shaft configurations. This clutch-type differential is perfect for light-to-medium weight street vehicles where one wants posi-action and long clutch life, without the adverse handling effects or noise of a full locker. When coasting around turns, the clutches are disengaged to extend clutch life. When accelerating in a straight line on dry pavement, the clutches engage, sending equal power to both wheels for maximum traction. This makes them ideal for street use, with the occasional trip to the drag strip as well.

All third members are assembled by our team of professionals and are delivered to you in a handy plastic carrying case, for an overall value that can’t be beat

Available in your choice of 3.50, 3.70, 3.89, 4.11 or 4.56 gear ratio.

Gear lube recommendations :

  • 910-44090 - for street and every day driving under normal conditions
  • 910-44140 -  for extreme duty, towing, or very hot climates
