When ordering do you need any numbers off the rear end? My mechanic asked what rear do i have in my hot rod and all i know its a 9" ford. he said he needs this info to order the correct seal. he instructed me to look for any numbers on the rear. i found letters/numbers on top of the rear, but the local NAPA store could not find anything with them.

All 9" Ford rear ends use the same pinion seal. There are some differences in bearing sizes but the third member will need to be removed and disassembled in order to measure the bearing sizes so that the correct bearings can be ordered.

There will not be much for special tools required. For step by step instructions you will want to consult a maintenance manual such as Chilton's repair manual for your vehicle.
