What's in the Box

Info

These steel axle shafts have a natural finish and are sold individually. They are perfect for small shops and will allow you to build your own custom width rear end easily. Axle length is measured from the flange to the end of the splines. Be sure to select your choice length; short or long, and either 28 or 31 spline.

  • 9 Inch Ford
  • 28 or 31 spline axle
  • Long or Short
  • Axle has the new style big bearing ends on it
  • Bearing measures 3.150"
  • Bearings already pressed in
  • 2-1/2" Offset
  • Drilled for 5 on 4-1/2", 5 on 4-3/4", and 5 on 5" wheel bolt patterns using 0.685" knurl dia.
  • PA20 set bearing
  • AR375 Torino retainer
  • Axle length is from the flange to the end of the splines
  • Axles sold each, not as a pair
  • Axles have 3 bolt patterns in them: 5 on 4-1/2", 5 on 4-3/4", and 5 on 5"
  • The hub pilot (center of the axle flange) measures 3.055"
  • The O.D. of the axle flange measures 5.93"
  • Wheel studs sold separately 910-05957 and 910-05958

For more information on determining the proper axle length and the Ford 9 Inch, be sure to check out our tech articles; How to Measure and ID Differential Housings and The Rearend Debate: Ford vs. Chevy.

Notes:

  • Long:
    • 33" length with 9-1/4" of spline
  • Short:
    • 29.51" length with 10" of spline

Installation Notes:

Disc brake kits may require increasing the i/d of the center hole in the rotor to match the o/d register or hub pilot on the axle flange, or reducing the diameter of the register or hub pilot on the axle to fit properly to the i/d of the rotor.

When installing new axles in rearends with posi traction differentials, be sure to install the driver's side axle first to keep the splines properly aligned.  Failure to do so may move the two splined gears out of alignment, and it may be difficult to install the driver's side axle properly if the passenger side axle is already installed.

If installation of passenger side axle is done first it may require two people when installing the driver's side axle, with both parties rotating reach axle until splines are in line and the driver's side axle fully sides into the housing.

When cutting axles to desired lengths, it is recommended that the following procedures are performed:

  • Normal steel cutting machinery (cold saw, band saw, chop saw, etc.)
  • Using a sleeve around the axle such as a small piece of PVC tubing - this allows:
    • The axle to be spun in place while being cut
    • A perimeter cut around the outer diameter assisting in keeping the cut square
    • Avoiding the build-up of too much heat by doing a straight cut (like a knife though a stick of butter)

To ensure you get the most out of your new 9 Inch components, it is recommended that you perform a proper break-in process:

  • Use a name brand mineral-based gear oil, preferably 85w140 (Extremely high quality synthetic oils may be used once break-in process has been successfully performed)
  • Place vehicle on jack stands and let the rearend spin while the vehicle idles - run transmission in both forward and reverse periodically throughout the process
  • Continue to run the rearend until the pinion gets hot (place hand on bottom of the differential housing to verify this)
  • Proper break-in allows:
    • The ability to install new axles and hit the track the same day without worry
    • Extended life for rearend components
    • Keeps the quality and life of your gear oil

November 01, 2016
Worked great and cheaper than having a set re-splined, Should have bought the longer set so the exposed splines were less after I cut the length.
Pros:
  • Great Quality
  • Good Quality Bearings
  • Easy Install

Just what I needed.

September 26, 2016
Needed a pair of axles for a Quick Change I was putting together for my current project and since like most I'm doing it on a budget so these fit the bill. Fairly easy to cut, rather than just trying to slice straight through I slid through a piece of exhaust tubing and rotated the while cutting so heat did not build up. I did have to turn down hub end to fit my brake drums but since I have a lathe not much of an issue.
Yes, I recommend this product.

great option!

September 21, 2016
I used this axle to replace an axle factory axle out of an unknown donor vehicle. Mine used the large sealed ball bearings and this one comes with the tapered bearings pre-installed. I removed the old housing seal and froze the race over night. Went in like a charm. If you want extra long 1/2" studs use Moroso 46190. I did have to elongate the retainer plate holes to match my housing. The only real hurtle has to be the brake index size. To fit factory type brakes you will need to have it turned down in a lathe.
Pros:
  • Price
  • Multi Wheel Pattern
  • Extra Long Splines
  • Cut To Fit Length
Cons:
  • Brake Index Size
Yes, I recommend this product.

Very clean with nice welds.

June 02, 2016
This product was really clean and looked to be high quality. The only issue I had was the flange to flange measurement. It said 60" flange to flange and I thought it was the housing flange, not axle flange to axle flange. Turned out to be too narrow for my open wheel hot rod. Bummer, I really wanted to use it.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Trapper, thanks for your feedback. Due to the universal nature of these axles, slight modification to the brake register may be required depending on the wheels used.

Sorry we only offer this axle with the new style big bearing Ford size. We do offer Currie cut to fit axles 91098832 and 91098828 which are for small bearing Ford housings.

Yes this axle will fit into housing 91048373. You will need one short and one long of this axle to use with that housing. They will need to be cut down to 26" and 30 1/2".

No these axles will not fit an early Mustang rear end housing. These axles have the big Ford new style bearing size which was used in the Turino 9" rear ends. Axle part numbers 91098828 and 91098832 fit the small bearing Ford housings with 2 1/2" axle offset. You can use this chart to identify the bearing size of your housing: http://static.speedwaymotors.com/images/charts/Axleflange.gif

brake register issue I just bought a pair of these axles (long and short) and it did not mention in the description that they have a very odd 3.0625 brake register. I already bought a disc brake kit that uses a standard 2.78 brake register (identical to the one Speedway Motors sells). I cannot find any rotors that have a brake register over 3", what does Speedway Motors intend for their customers to do to get a brake rotor on these axles?

You are correct the brake register on this axle is 3.0625" OD. It works well with disc brake hats such as 8351703695. If using this with a drum or rotor with a smaller register diameter then the axle register or the drum/rotor will need machined to fit.

This axle has 2 1/2" offset which is standard for the new style big bearing Ford housings that this axle fits. Sorry for the discrepancy. The 91046100 housing requires one 28 5/8" long axle and one 26 1/4" axle. These cut to fit axles have enough spline that you could use either the short or long axles to get both lengths needed.

Can this axle and bearing be used with the big ford old style housing end if a old style retainer is used?

Answers

November 11, 2014
EricM
It is possible to modify the old style retainer to allow this axle to be used but this will have a different axle offset than the old style bearing axles have. If you are using drum brakes this is a big concern since the drum will not be positioned correctly on the shoes and typically will rub on the backing plate. If you have disc brakes on it then you may have to move the caliper bracket to compensate for the difference in axle offset.

The flange OD is 5 15/16" and the brake register is 3.060" OD. This is for a big bearing new style or commonly called "Torino bearing" which uses the PA20 bearing set.

This axle uses the big Ford new style bearing which is a "set 20" bearing (commonly reffered to as the Turino bearing). We offer the replacement bearings as part number 9108015. To determine if this axle will fit your rear end housing measure the housing flange bolt pattern. If yours measures 2" top to bottom and 3 9/16" front to rear then you have the big Ford new style bearing and this axle will work for you.
