Q & A

What's in the Box

Help your vintage engine keep cool by adding an electric cooling fan to your radiator. Electric fans are far more efficient than mechanical engine driven fans because they free up horsepower and only run when you want them to (when used with a fan controller, not included). Plus, most electric fans can be mounted ahead of the radiator or behind the radiator, with the more efficient location being on the engine side of the radiator.

These powerful electric fans work with 6-volt electrical systems and draw 6 to 10 amps, depending on the size. The fan is supplied as a "puller" to mount behind the radiator, but it can be changed to a "pusher" by reversing the wires, flipping the fan blade and mounting in front of the radiator.
  • Available in 12", 14" or 16" diameters
  • Fans have 10 straight blades
  • High impact plastic construction
  • Sealed ball bearings for long life
  • Can push or pull
  • Works with positive or negative ground systems
  • Includes mounting ears (straps not included)

Instructions (PDF)

For best results, be sure that your generator supplies enough current to power the fan. If it does not, check out our 6 Volt Alternator 91067169. It supplies additional current at idle to run electric accessories, unlike many factory generators. To learn more about the importance of using a fan shroud along with your cooling fan, read our tech article Radiator Cooling Performance.

Just what I needed

July 04, 2014
My stock 1940 Ford coupe always ran hot. The 16" 6 volt fan was a perfect fit for the radiator and the engine runs much cooler now. After I drive the car, I shut the engine off but let the fan run for a while and it cools it off very quickly.
Yes, I recommend this product.

not what it said it was.

October 28, 2013
very pleased with the speed of the delivery; very pleased with customer service attention to me the customer; very pleased with the cost of shipping; very pleased with SPEEDWAY'S overall performance; not at all pleased with the product; it was advertised as .performing at 2500 cfm. it would not do this, it was very weak & would not cool my engine which was a 221cu", 85 hp flat head ford engine; had to send it back after installing & uninstalling. A serious disappointment & hassle for nothing.
Pros:
  • bad performance
  • nice installation
  • nice overall package
No, I would not recommend this product.

Merchant Response:

Hello, thanks for your feedback. We apologize for listing the incorrect CFM rating for this fan and any inconvenience it has caused. We have corrected our description of this product and sent you a refund. Please note that successfully cooling any engine requires a combination of all the components in the system working together. From selecting the right thermostat for coolant dwell to tuning, there are a lot of things that will vary the efficacy of the water to absorb and exchange heat. Cooling issues can also stem from problems related to belt slippage, incorrect timing, a vacuum leak, water jacket deposits, an inadequate radiator, insufficient fan/radiator shrouding, a bad water pump, etc. Bolting on an electric fan may seem like an easy fix, but it will not always solve the problem. If you continue to have cooling problems, please call one of our knowledgeable techs at 800.979.0122 and they will help you diagnose the problem.

great item,solved my cooling problem

November 09, 2012
Replaced the 216 motor in a 41 Chevy coupe with a 235 from 1960. the clearance would not allow us to use a stock fan. Our only option was the 6 volt fan. Works great, glad we had to go this route. woud suggest an auto swithch but we were not able to find one
Yes, I recommend this product.

This fan is rated at 2500 CFM and is set up as a pulling fan. It can be reversed by changing blade and the wires to a pusher fan. The fan can be hooked up as a positive or negative ground, just match your system.

This fan is more efficient that the stock mechanical fan especially at idle with low engine rpm. It can be mounted ahead of the radiator or behind the radiator with the more efficient location being on the engine side of the radiator. Yes, remove stock fan. To determine feasibility of mounting below are some dimensions that may be of help: MEASURES: 14-3/4"ON THE "WIDE" SIDE 14" ON THE "NARROW" SIDE 3-1/2"DEEP AT THE CENTER OF THE MOTOR. 1-1/2"DEEP AT THE EDGE. 13-1/2"is O.D of the blade AS SUPPLIED, THIS IS A "PULLER" FAN. IT CAN BE CHANGED TO A 'PUSHER" BY REVERSING THE BLADE AND THE WIRES. INCLUDES: 4 EA ADJUSTABLE MOUNTING BRACKETS You may also be interested in a 6 volt alternator as this draws additional current and at idle your factory generator will not keep up. Number for the alternator is 91067168.

If you are still running the 6-volt system on your car, truck or even tractor, the generator is your weak point. Even at highway speed that old generator cannot put out enough to keep up with the lights, heater motor and radio. This alternator puts out 60 amps at 7.5 volts at highway speeds, up to 30 amps at idle, and has the regulator built in. It includes the required plug and can be installed on almost any engine by modifying or purchasing a new mounting bracket.
