Many ratios to choose from.
Note: When replacing a stock 2.56 (or numerically lower) ratio, the carrier must also be replaced with a 2.73 or higher ratio's carrier to compensate for the difference in ring gear thickness.

I bought 5.38 8.5 ring gear & cross pin from you last week I'm getting ready to put it in I've got a 2.73 carrier will it work or do I need a space? I have a 3.08 carrier but it is in another car and I don't want to take it out.I've herad it needs to be a 3.08 or bigger.

Yes your 2.73 carrier will work with the 5.38 ring & pinion. The only reason you would need a spacer or to change the carrier is if your 8.5 10 bolt rear end had 2.56 or numerically lower gear ratio originally.
