Drum spindles require modification to be able to use a disc brake kit such as 91031958. The upper backing plate boss (threaded boss with the bolt in it in the spindle picture) on a drum spindle will need to be machined down approximately .610". That is the difference between a drum brake spindle and a disc brake spindle.

So if I'm converting from drum to disc and the boss on the drum spindle is thicker, any issue mounting to existing ball joint? Put another way, are there enough threads on the upper ball joint to mount this new spindle with a thinner upper boss or will I need to replace the upper ball joint?

Nothing changes at the upper ball joint between the drum and disc spindles. It had to do with the distance that the boss protrudes that you see the bolt screwed into in this picture.

I would suggest getting the entire brake kit if you need calipers and rotors. Our brake kit for these spindles is part number 91031958. It comes with the brake brackets, bearings, brake pads, etc. as well as the calipers and rotors.

The steering arms are different thickness where they mount to the spindle and you would need a minimum of 2 ¼” and 2 ½” for just the backing plate thickness. If you are using in conjunction with a disc brake kit then it requires ½ x 20 x 3” long bolts.

The primary difference between these spindles and 'drum-brake' spindles is the thickness of the upper mount boss. The upper boss is app 5/8" thicker on drum brake spindles than it is on 'disc-brake' spindles. You can use these with drum brakes, but some modifications will have to be made to the spindles and the backing plates. We suggest that you call our toll free number and ask for a Street Rod Tech. We will be happy to discuss the modifications that must be made to use the 1964-72 GM Midsize Disc Brake Spindles, item #: 91034900, for use with drum brakes

Speedway part number 91034900. These spindles will fit Camaros from 1967-1972. 1973 Camaro spindles had an integrated caliper bracket and steering arm. The difference between the 67-69, and 70-72 spindles is the steering arms. An early Camaro had rear steer, and the 70-72 used front steer. These arms will accept either the 67-69, or 70-72 steering arms.

This number refers to stock height disc brake spindles and we also offer spindle number 91034908 and these will lower the car 2” from it’s present ride height. It does not correlate to stock height and whether your springs have settled or not the ride height will change by 2” from your cars present height.
