The difference in the Mustang headers is as follows: 9308426 is a replica of the Shelby tri-y header, it is 1-1/2" to 1-3/4" stepped header with 2-1/2" collectors. It will require power steering bracket part #9307609. Listed for 1964-70 9308403 will fit with a C-4 and C-6 but not with a 1971-73 manual transmission or Dart/Windsor or Boss style heads. It has 1-5/8" primaries and 3" collector. Listed for 1964-73

These headers have a flange for the 289-302 and 351W. The flange is incorrect for the 351C-2 V heads and is NOT a direct bolt on. You may want to check with Pertronix to see if a header is produced for your application. If not you may need to cut the existing flanges off, expand the tube ends, and reweld into header flange number 41811142 which is available through Speedway.

The reason for the different configuration of the primary tubes on each side of the Shelby-style Tri-Y's was to separate the exhaust pulses from the consecutive-firing cylinders to promote flow and upper-RPM torque. This made them act more like 4-into-1 long tube headers, while having less weight and width, characteristics which are typical of most Tri-Y headers.

These headers are a replica or copy of the original Shelby headers from the 60’s. For the reasoning behind the tube configuration you may want to web search come of Carrol Shelby’s history for the design criteria of these headers. The configuration may be simply for clearance issues prevalent on the early Mustangs.

These headers are designed to fit the stock or stock style head configuration for port and bolt pattern. If using a different head as long as it will accept the stock gaskets the headers should work. There are many notations on this header and some are as follows: 1. 1967-70 Manual transmission cars require additional driver's side header clearancing around steering box. 2. Fits manual transmissions using 10" or 10.5" clutch only. 1968-up bellhousings require drivers side header clearancing. 3. Non-HiPo cars with manual transmission may need header clearancing for clutch linkage.
