What's in the Box

Info

Our dropped axles for your classic Ford F1 pickup will get the front end down where you want it. The center portion of the axle is made of 2" DOM tubing while the ends are CNC milled from solid steel. These axles give you 3" of drop on the 48-56 chassis.  Tie rod drops required, U-bolts sold separately.

If using this axle in conjunction with drop springs, you may encounter bump steer or tie rod issues.

  • 48-52 Ford: 3" drop
  • This axle has a 3" drop compared to a stock axle, and features built-in
    bosses for shock mounting.
  • Dropped tie rod ends 910 48640 are generally required to permit the tie-rod
    assy. to clear the springs.
  • Further, if you are also using dropped front springs, they may need
to modify their drag-link/pitman arm to prevent bump-steer.
  • Kingpin center to center = 50 1/2"
  • Spring pad center to center = 29 1/8"

Decent piece

July 05, 2015
Part was delivered quick, but had some clearance issues with my stock spindles and such. Seems to be aligned right, so I don't think I'll have to take the truck to the shop for an alignment.. For the money not a bad piece, but I wish it would have come with u bolts included.
Yes, I recommend this product.

As with any solid axle camber is not adjustable. The axle must be heated and/or bent in order to change the camber. This was a common practice years ago when these vehicles were on the road but most alignment shops today will most likely not provide that service. You may want to research hot rod shops in your area to find someone to perform this if needed, however most of these get put together and the camber left as is since the vehicle usually see limited mileage anyhow.

The axle did not fit my stock spindles at all, so now I am stuck with an installed axle, and I can't put the truck back on the ground. The axle is too large, or the bearing is too thick... One of two possible issues.

Stock 1948 to 1952 F1 Pickup spindles must be used on this axle. Sorry we do not offer those spindles.

These axles have been used with about every engine option available including a blown big block. You should not have any problems with the axle strength with your 460 transplant.

These dropped axles for the Ford pickups DO require the dropped tie rods to allow for spring clearance. Part number 91048640 is for the dropped tie rod ends. Further, if the customer is also using dropped front springs, they may need to modify their drag-link/pitman arm to prevent bump-steer.

I just purchased the axle. Is the drop axle directional? Is there a Front or Back to it? Or it doesn't matter?

Solid axles commonly are not specific front or rear but for verification compare the axle boss for the kingpin in relation to the spring pad. The king pin needs to lean back at the top for positive castor and proper steering geometry. Angle shims are available for many applications to help increase or decrease the castor to desired specification.

We apologize but this axle is only applicable to the' 48 to '52 because the earlier years were narrower and the spring spacing different.

Do you sell the U bolts to mount the axle to the springs. I'd rather not use the 65 year old originals on my truck. If you do, what is the part number for those?

Two of the nuts stripped upon installation, so now I have a new one, and an original on each side. I had to add some leaves back, an had to cut two of them off. Now my spindles will not fit the new drop axle, so everything you have sent me so far will not work together. That's why I asked up front, before I spent the money. Oh well, live and learn. I will be spending my money somewhere else from now on. The drop tie rods I just bought, will be my last purchase...

I got the 9163325 U bolts, and the threads come up too short to tighten the axle down against the spring. The nuts stopped about a 1/4" before they clamped the spring. You might want to change that info, because despite having three or more inches of threads they don't need on the long end, it comes up short while tightening them down. I am off to the trailer shop this morning, to find some U bolts like the originals so I can complete the installation.
