Q & A

What's in the Box

Our dropped axles for your classic Ford F1 pickup will get the front end down where you want it. The center portion of the axle is made of 2" DOM tubing while the ends are CNC milled from solid steel. These axles give you 3" of drop on the '48-'56 chassis.  Tie rod drops required, U-bolts sold separately.

If using this axle in conjunction with drop springs, you may encounter bump steer or tie rod issues.

  • '48-'52 Ford: 3" drop
  • This axle has a 3" drop compared to a stock axle, and features built-in
    bosses for shock mounting.
  • Dropped tie rod ends 910 48640 are generally required to permit the tie-rod
    assy. to clear the springs.
  • Further, if you are also using dropped front springs, they may need
to modify their drag-link/pitman arm to prevent bump-steer.
  • Kingpin center to center = 50 1/2"
  • Spring pad center to center = 29 1/8"

As with any solid axle camber is not adjustable. The axle must be heated and/or bent in order to change the camber. This was a common practice years ago when these vehicles were on the road but most alignment shops today will most likely not provide that service. You may want to research hot rod shops in your area to find someone to perform this if needed, however most of these get put together and the camber left as is since the vehicle usually see limited mileage anyhow.

These axles have been used with about every engine option available including a blown big block. You should not have any problems with the axle strength with your 460 transplant.

These dropped axles for the Ford pickups DO require the dropped tie rods to allow for spring clearance. Part number 91048640 is for the dropped tie rod ends. Further, if the customer is also using dropped front springs, they may need to modify their drag-link/pitman arm to prevent bump-steer.

I just purchased the axle. Is the drop axle directional? Is there a Front or Back to it? Or it doesn't matter?

Solid axles commonly are not specific front or rear but for verification compare the axle boss for the kingpin in relation to the spring pad. The king pin needs to lean back at the top for positive castor and proper steering geometry. Angle shims are available for many applications to help increase or decrease the castor to desired specification.
