Q & A

What's in the Box

This kit lets you install a 1969-87 Chevy 2WD power steering box with a 13/16"-36 spline input shaft in your 1947-59 Chevy pickup. Included are the pitman arm, steering arm, drag link, collapsible steering shaft and hardware. Welding required.

These kits come with spacers and mounting tabs that are welded to the frame of the pickup to mount the steering box. The original steering column will require alteration and must be welded to the collapsible shaft included in the kit.

Notes

910-321321 (1947-1959 kit)

  1.  This kit comes with a 13-16"-36 U-joint to fit the steering box. It connects to a 3/4" DD shaft which would connect to an aftermarket column or a "modified" stock column for this truck. The kit includes a special pitman arm, a special upper arm, a new drag link, plus the aforementioned U-joint and DD shaft.

Do you offer a modifyed steering arm for a drop axle? My 2nd question on this product; I realize i will have to modify the steering arm for the drop axle which i assume would be to drop the steering arm, do you offer a steering arm to work with the drop axle? or is this not going to be a problem as it is?

Depending on the drop in the axle and the final ride height. You may have to use the bottom two holes on the spindle instead of the top or you may have to fabricate a specific dropped arm. Dropped arms for this application are not currently available and would be up to the builder to fabricate if needed. As short as the drag link is you would not want to end up with a severe angle as this could present other issues.

The kit and the mounting tab that requires welding to the frame should be fine. The differences that may come into play are the input shaft on the manual box matching the U-joint in the kit that is 13/16 x 36 spline and possibly the length of the shaft from the gear to the column.

This power steering kit is for the 47-54 half ton pickup. The bottom of the column shaft requires alteration and modification. The column has to be shortened on the gear box end and the shaft cut free. Once free the part that goes onto the end of the inner shaft is a U-joint and then an intermediate shaft along with another u-joint at the steering gear. During the re-work of the column you may want to check and see if there is any way to retain the column shift. There also has to be a retaining bearing installed in the tube of the column to support the shaft.

What is the distance between the holes on the new steering arm Where the arm bolts to the backing plate by the kingpins on the spindle I was hoping to get a measurement to see if it will fit my 42 1.5 ton chevy. I am converting to a 47 2 ton column and possibly to power steering. Thanks John

The center to center of the steering arm that bolts to the spindle is 3 1/8” which is common for the Chevy half ton spindles.

Kit number 91032132 is a power steering conversion for your 47-54 Chevy half ton pickup and the upper steering arm that bolts to the spindle has 3 1/8” center to center mount pattern. If your ¾ ton has the same mount pattern and you can adjust the steering gear mount accordingly if your frame height is different then with some modifications could be adapted to a ¾ ton chassis.

Small Block Chevy Power Steering Pump Bracket
(Part #91332902)

This power steering pump bracket mounts a stock-style GM pump to a S/B Chevy block. Must be used with a short style water pump. Mounts on the lower left side. Bracket is zinc plated with threaded shaft. Designed to work with a '70-'82 GM pump that has a threaded pulley shaft, not a press-on style.

Works with bolt-on or press-on pulleys with a mount spacing of 3.75". Due to the variety of pulley configurations, it is likely that you will have to space the pump/bracket for belt alignment.

Note: This will NOT work when used on early 1970's Chevelle/Camaro chassis with a steering box.

Pump has a 3/8" hose barb for return line and a female 5/8"-18 inverted flare fitting for the high pressure outlet. Pulley not included.

  • Saginaw power steering pump with a new reservoir, billet cap, chrome hardware and new dipstick
  • Powder coated black or chrome
  • Keyed shaft for easy pulley intallation
  • Pulleys available in plain, polished, and chrome
