Q & A

What's in the Box

Our 3" dropped axle for your classic '47-'54 Chevy half-ton pick-up will get the front end down where you want it. The center portion of the axle is made of 2" DOM tubing while the ends are CNC milled for solid steel. These axles give you 3" of drop.

The Chevy axles require the steering arm to be modified to accept rod ends or tie rods. U-bolts sold separately.

  • King pin to king pin centers = 50.5"
  • 6" drop measured from spring pad to spindle boss center
  • Axle accepts a 1-3/4" wide spring
  • Spring pad center-to-center = 26.75"
  • Center to center of u-bolt holes is 2.30" side to side
  • Center to center of u-bolt holes front to rear is 3.195"
  • Spring pad width is 29.072" center to center of the outer U-bolt holes
  • Axle Kingpin Boss Height:  2-7/16" (2.438")
  • Axle will provide a camber reading of -1.5 degrees

Application

  • King pin to king pin centers = 50.5"

  • Axle Kingpin Boss Height:  2-7/16" (2.438")

Notes

  1. Due to differences in OEM manufacturing, kingpin bearings measuring ½” thick will NOT work with this axle. If you have this size bearing, you will also need to order our Kingpin Kit 910-32130. The thrust bearing in this kit measures .225" thick. Also included is a .315" spacer (if needed). Normal shims and a shim kit are also included.

To use axle number 9104754 on your '45 Chevy we suggest you first measure your perch centers for the leaf springs and compare to the 26.75" center to center on this axle. Also this axle is 50.5" kingpin center to kingpin center as another comparison. There is controversy on the spindles being the same as far as camber angle built into the axle and the spindles but if you are confident the spindles are interchangeable and the dimensions are correct then it could be used.

This axle will work fine to drop your 51 Chevy pickup frame 3" and will use the stock springs. We suggest replacing the kingpins during installation using kit 91032130. Disc brake kit 91031916 will work well along with drop axle.

This axle will not work on the earlier years because of spring pad location and axle width. Our website has a list of dimensions for comparison under the “Specs” tab on the main page for comparison to your axle needs. If wanting a dropped axle on your ’41 you may want to consider part number 91035115 or 91035117 along with a pair of spring pads number 91635009 and the U-bolts. This axle would take the 49-54 passenger car spindles we offer under part number 91032100 and the coordinating brake kits.

These axles are specific to the ½ Ton 1947-54 Chevy and GMC pickups using the .867 diameter king pins. During these years there was a difference in king pin boss height and we suggest ordering our king pin set number 91032130 that utilizes a thinner thrust bearing and also includes the necessary spacers and shims for ease of assembly. You many want to get an accurate dimension of your king pins for possible use. The axle boss geometry is approximately 7 ¼ degree of lean inward of the king pins.

These dropped axles are direct fit to the 1947-54 Chevy half ton pickups and will not work with the earlier years. Width, king pin diameter, and camber angle built into the axle ends is different. If wanting a dropped axle on the earlier 1931 Chevy pickup you may want to consider a plain dropped tube axle such as our part number 91035115 which is 4” drop or also a 6” drop is available under part number 91035117. The original spindles will NOT work on these axles and you would also need to purchase our Chevy spindles under part number 91032100 and the appropriate disc brake kit to make it a complete assembly. The axles are bare and for mounting to the parallel leaf springs in your truck you would also need the spring pads number 91635009, U-bolts, and any related hardware.

Speedway part number 9104754. I'm sorry to say that I do not know if it will work on your pickup. I can only go by the year range they are biult for, which is 1947 to 1954. The kingpin inclination angle, axle boss height, width of the axle, etc may vary from what your original axle is.

Many customers prefer to use the lowered springs as compared to the axle that runs negative camber. The easy way to tell if you have the first series is by the spring width. The 47-54 use 1.75" wide springs and the 55-59 use a 2" wide front spring. Plus lowering the truck 3" the 580441 for the 47-54 or the 580445 for the 55-59 gives a way better ride than the stock multi-leaf springs and they come with new U-bolts.
