On the 1940 tail lights number 91137020 there are two wires. Black is tail lights and green is stop/turn circuit and the light grounds thru the mount studs.

These 1940 Ford taillights have the same contour a 40 ford rear fender has, so they would not mount directly to a flat surface. There is a slight arc on the back side.
