What's in the Box

Info

Speedway Motors offers this billet aluminum electronic distributor for the fabulous '32-'41 Flathead Ford V8 with the 3-bolt mount. This distributor is a "ready-to-run" unit that does not require a control box.

We suggest a 12v coil 447-45001 (chrome) or 447-45011 (black) to be used with this distributor. We also suggest our spark plug wire set 910-64200.

910-8353 Instructions (PDF)

Specs

  • Requires a coil with a minimum of 1.4 ohms of resistance
  • Uses Mallory replacement parts (module, rotor, cap)
  • Measures 4" from mount surface to the outside of the cap
  • Will not fit some stock fan configurations (may require the use of an electric fan)

AWESOME!!!!

I replaced the 70 year old ignition technology on my Ford Flathead with a "headache free" electronic ignition with GREAT success. The engine started on second try after 40 plus years after rebuild.
Pros:
  • Easy To Install
  • Improves Performance
Yes, I recommend this product.

Good Product -- But Proceed w/Caution

October 26, 2011
I think this would be an excellent product -- but only for those who are not looking to preserve a stock fan configuration. It will fit/work ONLY if stock fan and crank pulley are removed and electric fan is substituted. I was especially pleased by Speedway's willingness to allow me to return the unit and refund the purchase price -- excellent customer service!
Pros:
  • Improves Performance
  • Easy To Install
No, I would not recommend this product.

This distributor will not work with 6 volt systems. You must have a 12 volt negative ground system for this distributor. The dual point distributors will work on 6 volt negative ground systems. Most likely the fan would need to be relocated on your 1940 Ford sedan.

Will this bolt on to a 39 V8 60? Is it a mechanical or vacuum advance? The vehicle I want to use this on is already 12V neg ground I have this motor in a 1930 Model A Ford pickup and I just can't seem to get the timing right with the original distributor. I'm hoping yours will solve the problem.

This is a mechanical advance distributor for the early Ford V8’s but we apologize it is NOT for the V8-60. Sorry we do not offer a distributor for the 60 series engines.

The Flathead electronic distributors are all 12 volt negative ground. The dual point version will work with 6 or 12 volt.

Part number 9108353 This is a 12 volt electronic distributor and does not require a control box. It does require the correct ohm rated coil or ballast resistor. Ohm required is 1.4 and we offer coil number 44745001. In some cases customers running an original fan set up there has been clearance issues requiring the use of an electric fan. This distributor measures 4” from the block to the face of the cap and is the 3 bolt mount.

Most Magnetic Breakerless Distributors with part numbers that end in 01 have 24° (crankshaft degrees) of mechanical advance (between 3,000 and 3,200 RPM). Listed below are exceptions: CHRYSLER SB V8 20 AT 3,000 RPM FLAT HEAD FORD V8 16 AT 3,600 RPM that clip was taken from the mallory distributor instructions. Its a exact copy of one of them. So yes, their weights and springs will also work.

Part number 9108353 does not require ignition box This distributor is ((VERY)) likely to be in the way of the stock fan on 41-48 Fords & Mercs. (it measures app.4" from the mount surface to the front side of the cap) It measures 4-1/2" tall from base to top of cap and 5-1/4" at widest point on cap.

None of the new distributors we offer from Mallory, MSD, or Speedway have the timing marks and require timing electronically like the later engines.

I have a 1940 Ford Deluxe Convertible Model 01A. I measured from engine block to outside stock distributor cap. It measured 5 1/2 inches and 6 inches to the fan. So I am confused why the electronic distributor will not fit measuring only 4 inches. What have i missed?

It may very well fit on your car, but it has had interfearance issues with fans in the past. These are taller and wider than a factory distributor, so take that into consideration as well.

In the installation instructions under "Wiring Procedure" it says to make sure there is a ballast resistor installed. The part description only says a coil with a resistance of 1.4 ohms is required. So is a ballast resistor actually required? If so, what should the resistance be in the whole system?

This distributor requires either a coil with no less than 1.4 ohms of resistance OR a coil with less resistance and addition of a ballast resistor such as number 500700.

This distributor does not require an ignition box or additional module. it has a module built into the distributor. All you will need in addition to this distributor is a coil such as 44745011 and spark plug wires.
