Q & A

What's in the Box

Things have changed considerably since the first Ford Flathead V8s were built more than 75 years ago, and Speedway Motors has the valve train parts you need to keep these vintage engines running on modern unleaded fuel.

You'll need these dual spring retainers if you're using heavy duty dual valve springs like our part number 450-4005. These are for serious performance and racing applications. Fits 1932-1953 Ford and Mercury Flathead V8s.

Notes

  1. Dual spring retainers are required when using dual valve springs on 1932-1953 Flathead Ford V8s. Our 45087F "retainer adapters" are used in conjunction with original-style keepers and/or retainers. Designed to be used with dual valve springs like our part # 4504005.

Flathead Ford Heat Treated Valve Guides

The Flathead was designed to run on fuel with high levels of lead, but even with leaded fuel, the stock valves will eventually hammer the seats out, which will close up the valve lash and leave your valves hanging open...that is if you don't seize a valve to the guides first!

Remember what year your engine was built and how fatigued the valve train components are. Henry may have built them right with the technology he had available then, but this is now and we have the modern components you need.

These Flathead Ford valve guides are heat treated to be compatible with today's low-lead fuels. Fits 1932-53 engines. If using in a 1932-48 engine, you will have to use 1949-53 style retainers, keepers and valves.

Flathead Ford V8 Heavy Duty Valve Keepers, 16 Pairs

Stock Flathead Fords have weak valve springs, which increases wear on retainers, valve stem grooves and keepers. Increased horsepower and hard driving often cause failure. Recommended as part of Speedway’s no-lead valve conversion for Flatheads.

  • Heavy-duty, case-hardened, stamped steel 7° keepers
  • Stronger than originals
  • Works with 1949-1953 valve stems and retainers
    16 Pairs
