No this will not fit your Flathead Ford engine. For the '49 to '53 flathead engines we offer thermostat number 91015802 in either160 or 180 degree.

This thermostat will fit in your 78 Ford 400 engine but it does not have the stock style bypass. This thermostat has three holes drilled in it to bypass some water even when the thermostat is closed. This is done because many racing water pumps do not have a bypass in them. When the thermostat closes it can cause water pump failure if these holes are not drilled into the thermostat. These holes will also cause the engine to warm up a little more slowly than without them. For this reason we suggest these for racing applications only.

All the ones that have failed on me were always in the closed position and usually after sitting for months without being started.

A thermostat can stick in just about any position and these high flow versions are no different than a standard thermostat in that regard.

I was having problems with my T over heating with a stock thermostat, but with this Speedway 180 high flow thermostat it seems to have fixed the problem. My temperature gauge has not gone over 180 since I have installed this Speedway thermostat. I'm running a 327 cu. in.-375 hp.

Yes you should run a high flow thermostat in any racing application that you want to run a thermostat. I highly suggest that you run anything but a stock water pump in your application. That is probably a big part of your cooling problem. If your rules require a cast iron pump then a Stewart Stage 1 pump is the way to go. It is part number 91015538. If an aluminum pump is allowed then the best bang for the buck is our Speedway aluminum race pump 91015581. It is a high flow water pump with heavy duty 3/4" shaft and bearings and will keep any circle track engine cool as long as the rest of the system is correct.

Red Line 80204 Water Wetter Coolant Additive
(Part #91015709)

Red Line Water Wetter Super Coolant additive is a unique wetting agent which reduces coolant temperatures by as much as 20° F. This is a liquid coolant treatment product which is designed to be added to solutions of antifreeze and water to help improve the heat transfer properties of glycol-based antifreeze. This liquid product can be used to provide rust and corrosion protection in plain water for racing engines, which provides much better heat transfer properties than glycol-based antifreeze. Improves the ability of coolant to wet heat transfer surfaces by 50%.

  • Reduces or eliminates bubbles that form on hot metal surfaces to reduce coolant temperatures by up to 20°
  • Superior heat transfer properties compared to glycol-based antifreeze
  • Compatible with new or used antifreeze (including DEX-COOL and long-life versions) to improve the heat transfer of ethylene and propylene glycol systems
  • Improves heat transfer and reduces cylinder head temperature
  • Designed for use with all modern aluminum, cast iron, copper, brass and bronze cooling systems
  • Cleans and lubricates water pump seals
  • Reduces cavitation and complexes with hard water to reduce scaling
  • Does not lower cooling system below the thermostatically-controlled temperature
  • 12 fl. oz. bottle treats 12-20 quarts
