Great safety product for your motor

September 23, 2014
I have a 1953 Ford Sunliner. 1953 Ford flathead V8 motors were the last year for Ford's V8 flathead motor. Ford used this type of motor for many years. This was a great V8. However as most early Ford owners knew, a major problem existed with the flathead motor. The motor had a tendency of overheating. This caused the antifreeze to get greater in volume. A safety valve known as the Radiator Cap would release the extra antifreeze into the overflow tube and onto the ground. Good idea this could save on damage to the motor. The Bad News was soon in the future the motor would overheat due to not having enough antifreeze in the cooling system. Now we have another safety product for the cooling system. This is the Expansion Tank. When the car overheats the excess antifreeze can go into an expansion tank, staying there until the motor cools down. At that time the antifreeze in the expansion tank will go back into the radiator. This will help your flathead motor have enough antifreeze, therefore not overheating as fast. My 53' Ford V8 flathead motor now has an air compressor for the added AC. This also requires another radiator. Now the motor can overheat even faster. The answer to my problem was to add an overflow tank. I purchased from Speedway Motors an overflow tank. It is a Stainless Steel Expansion Tank. The tank should help take care of my problem. Besides helping the overheating problem, it's another way to dress up the motor area. Ford wasn't the only Auto Manufacturer that had the overheating problem. I think that any car that does not have an expansion should add one now.

what is the diff between an expansion tank a overflow tank and a recovery tank?

They are one and the same.

Hello Little Bob here. I believe all these names are for the same item. As the engine heats up with a full radiator the pressure cap lets out expanded heated water. The tank catches this water and keeps it until the engine cools down and the pressure cap lets the water back into the radiator. If this tank is not in the system this water would be lost. Most engines would be OK with out catching this water but it does give you a reserve to fall back on in cast there is a slight leak. When expansion tanks are empty its a sign that water is being lost someplace. The word tank is not really a correct term; most of these recovery holders are plastic see thru containers. Hope this helps. RFD

Really no difference in what name you give the external tank. The additional tank handles the flow of coolant that keeps the radiator full. The radiators use to be oversized to handle this, and now you can check the level of coolant without opening the system. However, plastic tanks can and do give out. This stainless tank is a replacement that restores integrity to your cooling system.

Any of them could be the same and it depends on the radiator and the cap you are using. On a recovery style system the radiator stays completely full because as the coolant heats and expands the cap allows the coolant to escape and into a tank. As the coolant cools the cap also allows for the reserve in the tank to go back into the radiator. The inlet in the tank must be below the coolant level in the tank to do so and the tank is vented to allow for coolant exchange. A basic overflow tank is just a dump tank for the old style radiators and those radiators were never full to the top when they were cool.

Not a good idea. The tubes are sized according to function and then, how would you refill the tank?

Hello, Little Bob here. Its not made to be installed up side down. If you want it to be empty all the time, reverse the tubes. If you do mount it up side down you should still reverse the tubes but I still don't understand why you would want to do this??? Regards. RFD

I don't think so. The out flow tube is positioned a few inches from the top for expansion before it over flows. If the top of that tube is submerged, it will want to push out any fluid that is above it. After it starts to flow out, it might suction the rest of the fluid out. Also, I don't know if I would trust the cap to hold any pressure. It does have and o ring on the cap, but I wouldn't put too much stock in its ability to hold any pressure for long. I think it should be used for its intended purpose, and not made to work outside of its design parameter.

This overflow tank (part number: 91102213) is designed to be mounted with the cap up it has two tubes in the bottom one for inlet of fluid from the radiator and one for the overflow or vent. This has an o-ring cap on it and can not be pressurized. I suppose a person could mount it upside down but it is not designed to be mounted in that direction.
