Perfect Solution For my Period Rod w/ 40 Ford Backing Plates

February 10, 2016
I was looking for a new set of brake drums that I could use on my 29 Ford highboy on deuce rails. With factory '34 wire wheels a set of finned Buick drums wouldn't look quite right so I was stumped on what to do. I stumbled across these drums and it was a no brainer! They look vintage with the factory style ribbing, but provide modern braking performance! I had a nice set of 1940 Ford backing plates ready to go and these drums fit perfectly with no machining needed. The machining on these is very well done. They come well oiled in the packaging to prevent rust, but wouldn't need much for finishing before paint or powder coat! Awesome product!
Yes, I recommend this product.

These brake drums are excellent, and fit my needs perfectly

September 09, 2015
I have a tandem trailer that has old 60's type axles, and I wanted to reinstall the electric brakes that one of the axles had but unfortunately someone took them off at one time. The axle manufacturer does not make brake drums for these hubs any longer. I kept searching and searching, and finally came across these 1937-48 Ford brake drums, and low and behold they fit perfectly. Now I just have to add the armature plates and along with the typical trailer brake assemblies I'll be in business.
Pros:
  • Quality Brake Drums
  • Great Service
Yes, I recommend this product.

The brake drum number 91065400 works with a lot of the early Ford wheels including the wire wheels. Unfortunately not all the wheels were the same per the year they originated. The main flat surface the wheel bolts to is 7 15/16” and from there is angles inward 1 7/16” to where it is 10” diameter. From that point it goes straight out to 13 9/16”. The early wheels wrapped around the brake drums and you would need to compare these dimensions to the inside of your wheel to verify fit.

In order for these drums to fit with original hubs and backing plates the outside edge of the braking surface has to be machined down .088". Without doing this the drum makes contact with the outer face of the backing plates.

Brake drum part number 91065400 works with the aftermarket hubs featured in our catalogs and online and also many OEM applications. The depth of the drum may require minor machine work on some applications for clearance to the backing plates. Depth of the drum as sitting on the work bench to outer face is 3 7/8” for comparison to your original drums.

This drum is for use with the hubs using the slip over drums such as Speedway Number 91065450. It will not work as a replacement for the one piece hub and drum without also ordering the hubs mentioned and the bearing and seal kit. With the depth of the drum in some cases the inside edge may require minor machining for backing plate clearance.

This is for your 2" wide bendix brakes: what is the swept with of these drums (i.e. how much clearance will be left on either side of the shoes?)

These drums are machined to accept up to 2 inch shoes and also work with the 1 ¾” shoes. There is minimal machine surface available for any additional shoe width and the machine surface runs all the way inward with the inside edge being chamfered.

Will this work with the ford hydraulic brakes that have the hub mounted on the outside of the drum? I believe the 46-48 ford cars had them?

Ford had some variations of the hubs and drums and all in one assembly. In some cases going with the 2" required some machine work on the hub/drum combo as the machined surface was less than the two inch. In other cases the drum portion rubbed the backing plate and had to be machined down for clearance so it didn't go in so far.
